A Cape Town-based company has launched what it describes as the world’s first hospitality certification focused specifically on allergy management and sleep hygiene.
Peace of Sleep™ was launched in South Africa in September 2026, with its creators arguing that one of the most important parts of a hotel stay has largely been overlooked when it comes to formal guest-wellness standards: the bed.
According to the company, an estimated one in three people live with some form of allergy sensitivity. While hotels commonly have established housekeeping, linen and turndown standards, there has traditionally been no comparable certification specifically addressing the sleeping environment.
“Every part of the guest experience gets scrutinised, except this one,” says Charlie Wright, CEO and founder of Peace of Sleep™. “Properties have wellness menus, aromatherapy and mood lighting, all addressing the guest experience. But almost none offer a specific or provable assurance for the bed they will sleep in.”
A new standard for hotel rooms
Peace of Sleep™ is based on an audited allergy-management process designed for use in hotels and other hospitality properties.
The process is dry and chemical-free and can be carried out without taking rooms out of service, meaning properties can continue selling rooms while the treatment is performed.
Rather than being a once-off accreditation, the certification includes ongoing oversight. Properties can work towards one of three certification levels: Assured, Distinguished and Signature. The tiers are based on service frequency, giving hotels a pathway from initial certification to more frequent ongoing maintenance.
The company says the aim is for the certification to become a recognisable mark that properties can display as evidence of their approach to guest wellbeing.
“It’s not just a promise, it’s proof that guest wellbeing has been taken as seriously as everything else on the property,” says Wright.
Tintswalo becomes first certified boutique group
The certification has already gained a foothold in South Africa’s luxury hospitality sector.
Tintswalo Collection is the first boutique hospitality group in the country to hold Peace of Sleep™ certification across all of its properties, according to the company.
Peace of Sleep™ was soft-launched in March 2026 and is currently being introduced to a limited number of properties by invitation, ahead of a wider rollout.
From Cape Town to the world
While international hospitality standards are often developed in established tourism hubs, Peace of Sleep™ was developed and piloted in Cape Town’s boutique hospitality sector.
The company now intends to take the certification beyond South Africa, positioning it as a potential new standard for hotels and other accommodation providers internationally.
“There’s no reason the next hospitality standard has to come from London, Dubai, or New York,” says Wright. “We built this here, tested it here, and proved it here first.”
For travellers, the certification could offer another consideration when choosing accommodation, particularly for guests who are sensitive to allergens or place a high value on sleep and wellbeing while travelling.
Peace of Sleep™ is currently accepting enquiries from properties interested in certification.
